Oral health and beauty issues can have a profound impact on your career. A recent study from the American Dental Association found that 30% of people aged 18 to 34 reported their dental problems had interfered with successful interviews. The ADA study identified several issues that may be present in the minds of hiring managers and interviewers when faced with a potential employee whose smile is unappealing. Some of the biggest are:
- The impact a person’s appearance has on his or her ability to successfully interact with clients and customers. If your smile is unattractive to your potential employer, they may see that as an impediment to your success with clients and customers you may need to interact with.
- The willingness of a person to smile. When you are unwilling to smile due to embarrassment about your teeth or gums, the message you convey may not be open and pleasant, leading potential employers to misjudge you as cold or indifferent.
- Snap-judgement about self-discipline. A smile that does not look healthy may send the message to a potential employer that personal hygiene and self-discipline are not important to you. This can have a negative impact on their willingness to bring you onto the team.
As unfair and inaccurate as these judgments may be, they are real impediments to success.
