Since healthy baby teeth "pave the way" for healthy adult teeth, we at Highpoint Dental Care value our young years regarding dental health. Seeing children is an enjoyable part of our day at our kid-friendly office!
The American Dental Association (ADA) encourages parents to start bringing their little ones to the office as early as the age of one year old. Children will develop their primary dentition (baby teeth) between the ages of one and three. We offer complimentary dental appointments for this group of children known as "Happy Visits." These visits are fun, quick, and easy and can be completed during a parent's cleaning and examination with the child sitting in their parent's lap.
"Happy Visits" are used for pediatric dental health assessment, parent education, and acclimating young ones to the office. Pediatric patients between the ages of three and six will typically have all 20 primary (baby) teeth erupted and should undergo a "light" cleaning with the hygienist, a fluoride varnish treatment, and radiographs to assess early childhood decay if possible. Visiting our office around this time allows Dr. Baltz to show your child that there is nothing frightening about the dentist – a key part in preventing the development of dental phobia – while allowing us to evaluate oral health (teeth and gums), assess for orthodontic (crowding) problems, and for optimizing at-home routines.
Between the ages of six and 13 is known as the mixed dentition stage, which is a formative time to lay the groundwork for a life of proper oral health. This stage involves the development of permanent teeth and the loss of the primary (baby) teeth. At these visits, we will clean teeth, diagnose cavities and gum disease, recommend orthodontic intervention if needed, encourage good oral hygiene, and assess the proper development of the adult dentition.
At the age of 14, we will transition children to "adult" cleanings as they should have their full adult dentition. We will continue to monitor the young adult for orthodontic concerns and the development of their wisdom teeth, which we usually recommend for removal after the age of 16.
Our kid-friendly dentistry practice is stocked with amenities, including a children's lounge section with clean and safe toys, kids' music and movies, and comforts such as blankets and refreshments. When children are younger than eight or have a fear or potential fear of the dentist, Dr. Baltz will typically recommend nitrous oxide gas at a low level to help our procedures of removing "sugar bugs" not seem so scary.
We truly care about the comfort and happiness of each child we see and take every care to ensure our youngest patients feel safe and cared for at each stage of their visit. "We treat you like family" isn't a tagline. It's a core philosophy. We are pleased to extend this level of gentle, attentive, individualized care to everyone who walks through our doors.
Children’s dentistry services available at Highpoint Dental include:
While our gentle and playful approach helps younger patients feel comfortable, we understand that some treatments can feel, just by their nature, a bit frightening. If your child is nervous or anxious about dental treatment, we would be happy to discuss the option of free nitrous oxide in cases where appropriate. Please be sure to ask about this if you believe it is something your child may need. We are conservative in our application of this service but can safely provide some level of assisted comfort, even for younger patients.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been shown to greatly reduce the risk of cavities when added to drinking water and toothpaste. Professional fluoride treatments at the dental office involve applying a thin layer of concentrated fluoride to the teeth to help strengthen enamel and combat decay.
Fluoride varnish puts fluoride in contact with the tooth for an extended period of time to make it much more effective at mineralizing teeth than toothpaste or fluoride drinking water. This application is safe for children and at-risk adults and is recommended by the American Dental Association, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization. If you have concerns about fluoride, we would be happy to discuss them with you during your next appointment.
The children's dentistry services offered by Dr. Baltz are incredibly useful, but can only do so much. Optimizing your child's daily routine is essential for long-term oral health now and into the future.
Just like adults, kids ideally should brush their teeth 30 minutes after every meal and any sticky or sweet snack. Try to minimize your child's intake of sweetened treats, even dried fruits and fruit juices, that increase chances for tooth decay, and be sure to set the example by eating well and brushing your own teeth twice every day (morning and night). It can be helpful to brush your teeth with your kiddo to model ideal behavior and don't forget to visit us yourself every six months so we can make sure your teeth and supporting structures are healthy, brilliant, and bright all year round.
Most adults will experience gum disease at least once in their life. The first stage, gingivitis, is largely reversible through better oral hygiene habits and regular cleanings. Gum disease often begins with irritated gums that are red, swollen, and bleed during brushing or flossing.
When left untreated, gingivitis becomes periodontitis, which can then turn into the third and irreversible stage, advanced periodontitis. Your gums will begin to recede, exposing more of your tooth and roots to food particles and bacteria.
Recent research has linked advanced gum disease to heart disease and diabetes because that bacteria can spread through your bloodstream. Tooth loss and jawbone resorption often occur as well, making treatment critical for preserving your teeth, gums, and bone.
Traditional gum treatment involves pulling your gums away from your teeth and then using metal tools to remove the tartar, plaque and lingering bacteria that’s collected on your teeth and beneath your gums. This method is uncomfortable, but laser dentistry has revolutionized the way we treat advanced gum disease.
Our thorough dentist uses lasers for periodontic care to break up the tartar and plaque and remove irritating bacteria that’s causing the gum disease. Laser dentistry allows for gentle gum disease treatments. It’s non-invasive, making you feel better right away, and the gums typically return to good health.
We offer most dental procedures and treatments in-house, so you can improve your oral health and the appearance of your smile without leaving the comfort of our office in Aurora. From missing teeth to gingivitis, our family dentist can restore your smile using one or more of these options:
