Our warm and friendly staff, welcoming environment, and incredible dentists helped put him at ease and he, along with Jackie, are now regular patients. January 13 – 17, 2020 marks National Sugar Awareness Week, offing a great opportunity to reassess your relationship with this ubiquitous sweetener. Sugar is one of the most commonly abused substances in the world, and one whose excess consumption can lead to serious – even fatal – health complications. How Much Sugar do We Consume? The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that adult males consume no more than 37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons of sugar per day. For women, the AHA recommends no more than 20 grams/6 teaspoons. Children under 18 should consume fewer than 20 grams, with young children avoiding all added sugars. There are 120 teaspoons in a pound of sugar. According to… Read Full Post

Between nine and 20% of American adults are afraid to visit the dentist. At Highpoint Dental Care and Implant Center, we treat our youngest patients like our own children, providing them with a safe and fun space where they can become comfortable with professional dental care. At Highpoint Dental Care and Implant Center, we encourage parents to start bringing their little ones to the office for cleanings, examinations, and pediatric dentistry services around the age of three. By this age, a majority of your child’s baby teeth will have erupted and, hopefully, a daily oral hygiene habit has been developed. Visiting our office around this time allows Dr. Baltz and Dr. Rowe to show your child that there is nothing frightening about the dentist – a key part in preventing the development of dental phobia – while allowing us to evaluate your child’s oral health, address any concerns, and make suggestions and offer solutions for optimizing at-home routines. Our kid-friendly dentistry… Read Full Post

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is an odorless gas that, when inhaled, displaces oxygen in the lungs, resulting in a euphoric, pleasantly heavy, and calming physical and mental reaction. First used as a form of anesthesia in 1844, nitrous oxide is considered an “essential medicine” by the World Health Organization and is used daily in dental offices across the country. As a tool to manage anxiety and discomfort in dentistry, nitrous oxide has few equals. Incredibly fast to work, nitrous oxide will continue to provide a safe level of sedation as long as it is being administered. Once the mask is removed, the effects of laughing gas wear off quickly, allowing patients to function… Read Full Post

Your baby was born with all 20 primary teeth below their gumline. They typically start to come through between 6 and 12 months. Children usually have their full set of baby teeth in place by age 3. During this time, many new parents call our office with questions about baby teething remedies to get through what can be a very difficult time. It can be frustrating for parents to watch their child suffer through this process. Unfortunately, teething is a necessary part of life. Plain and simple, this is not a comfortable experience for a baby, they will not like it, and they are likely to be incredibly fussy while teething. Furthermore, drooling, loss of appetite, and trouble sleeping may… Read Full Post

An abscessed tooth can be quite undesirable as it can lead to infection, swelling of the face, and severe pain that can prevent you from completing normal, everyday tasks. Below, we take a look at what abscessed teeth really are, how you can identify them and what can be done to prevent or alleviate pain. Defining an Abscessed Tooth A dental abscess is an accumulation of pus that forms a pocket within the mouth. This pus stems from an infection and occurs as a result of the immune system’s response to combat this occurrence. An abscess can become too large or significant for the body’s immune system to handle. Two distinct types of abscesses occur within the mouth. The periodontal… Read Full Post

There are two main types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease (bone loss). Both of these diseases are caused by plaque, which is a collection of bacteria that lives in the mouth. When plaque is left on teeth around the gum tissue, it can cause inflammation to the gums, which causes them to bleed or appear swollen. When the plaque is left to sit for longer periods of time (i.e. when someone isn’t flossing), the plaque can harden into tarter (also known as calculus) and cause bone loss around the teeth. This bone loss is irreversible and is better known as periodontal disease, or periodontitis. More than half of people over age 30 have some form of periodontal disease… Read Full Post

When looking to find a dentist, we recommend that you visit our office and have your teeth checked for signs of bruxism. If you have not heard of this technical term, it is when people grind or clench their teeth at night or throughout the day when they are not eating. This condition, while seemingly minor, can lead to a cracked or chipped natural or replacement tooth along with enamel erosion, causing sensitive teeth. Signs of bruxism Those with bruxism typically have teeth that appear flat on the bottom. Naturally, teeth tend to have points where bruxism causes the enamel to wear down. Those with a severe degree of bruxism may start to see their teeth erode upwards as more of the tooth… Read Full Post
